Morzine Ski Resort  France...
Description

A substantial town stretching along both sides of the valley for around 1¾ mls. Its fairly picturesque old centre, situated around the church, has been largely superseded by a more elevated, modern area close by. This commercial focus is relatively compact, comprising a few streets packed with shops, bars, restaurants and local services which quickly give way to quieter residential areas. It is not the easiest place to get about and anyone who may have mobility difficulties should choose one of the more central hotels. Extremely busy at weekends.

Suitability:
An all-round resort with wide appeal, equally popular in winter and summer, providing a combination of alpine scenery and traditional atmosphere with a good range of sporting activities and excursions for all ages. Access to the extensive Portes du Soleil ski-domain means it has something to offer all grades of skier.

Accommodation:
50-plus hotels almost exclusively in the 1- to 3-star bracket. Wide choice of self-catering establishments from budget studios to smart chalets for up to 14 people; most self catering is offered by small companies and private landlords with none of the major property agencies represented.

Shopping:
Good selection for everyday needs as well as numerous gourmet delicatessens, gift and speciality outlets. Has none of the exclusive designer boutiques that grace some alpine resorts. Abundant ski-rental and sports outfitters.

Public Transport:
Free regular shuttle buses serve the centre and stop at the major ski-lifts. Free 'road train' shuttle between Super Morzine and Le Pleney cable cars. Less regular service to neighbouring resorts that share the same ski-pass. Public buses to Cluses and its mainline railway station with TGV connections.

Excursions:
In winter, limited to visits to neighbouring resorts included on the same ski-pass; bus to "old town" of Thornon; funicular to Lake Geneva; local heritage discovery visits (cheesemakers, slate quarry). In summer, full day: Geneva for shopping; Chamonix; Courmayeur (Italy); helicopter tours. 2 days: "adventure" expeditions offering rafting, kayaking, canyoning and mountain biking.

Ski Area Terrain

Beginners:
First time skiers are well looked after in the Portes du Soleil area. Avoriaz has perfect nursery slopes next to the resort, easily reached on foot or by ski-lift. Morzine has gentle nursery slopes at Le Pleney.

Intermediaries:
The Portes du Soleil is a fantastic area for intermediates. The skiing starts on your doorstep and for those who want to venture further, there is the entire Portes du Soleil circuit, with 650kms of runs.

Advanced:
Spanning across 12 ski resorts, the Portes du Soleil area has some of the most challenging skiing in France. There are more than 20 black runs, including some of the biggest moguls in the world on the "Wall" at Avoriaz, not to mention endless off-piste possibilities and the hair-raising "Jean Vuarnet" World Cup Downhill run from the top of Les Hauts Forts down to Les Prodains.

Snowboard Guide:
Avoriaz is easily one of the top European snowboarding destinations. It has always been heavily behind snowboarding and regularly features in international magazines, with riders like Nicolas Droz seen blasting the board park. Freeriders should check out the Hauts Forts area. The resorts are also a great place to get into the world of Heli-boarding and beginners will find Morzine no problem with plenty of wide, mellow terrain
