A Special Economic Zone in Fujian province, in southeast China, Xiamen is a clean, lively and thriving city with everything from historical landmarks to golden beaches.
One of the main attractions is Gulangyu, a tiny island just across the water from southwest Xiamen that was once a foreign enclave after the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 but is now the best place in the city to relax.
The western district is the oldest and most interesting area of the town to explore, with interesting architecture, parks and winding streets. From close by you can catch a ferry to the small island of Gulangyu, which is almost Mediterranean in its outlook. The island is less than 2 square kilometres in size so wandering around its winding paths is no great strain. Climb up Sunlight Rock, the highest point of the island and look out over the well-preserved 19th century buildings. A seafood dinner is a great way to end the day.
